About that opening scene of the first act in the play, i believe it has some sort of symbolism behind it. To me, the dark colors of the room bring a source of negative energy to the play. With the big portrait placed inside of the drawing room, in addition to the flowers, it seems as if the room is some sort of memorabilia for Hedda's father. Seeing how when people where dark-colored clothing to funerals and what not, the entire room is decorated in dark to instill the mourning of his death within the household.

Quick question......wouldn't you say that the opening scene in Act 1 maybe somewhat more peaceful and elegant because sunlight bathing the drawing room and a lively young couple returning from their honeymoon, seems pretty romantic and peaceful at the time for me....but hey idk...i would definitely agree with you on the opening scene of Act 4

I would have to agree with Rashad, the opening scene is peaceful and elegant because of the sunlight bathing the drawing room. If you read the beginning of act 4 you could argue that its a direct comparison with the beginning of the first act because in act 4 the same room is now dark with the windows close and its now evening instead of morning. Hedda is wearing dark clothes which basically gives some type of negativity to this scene.
